WRTING 1 Mayfly report
Mayflies are small fascinating insects, They live for only for a few days and eat nothing while it is an adult. There are over 2,000 species of Mayfly.
Mayflies have a incomplete metamorphosis.
What a mayfly looks like A mayfly nymph has gills on its abdomen and has three tails and 6 six legs on its body and has one claw on each leg. They have two long antennae.
A mayfly adult has wings, the first wing is bigger then the second wing, They can’t fold them down, they have 6 legs on its body and 3 tails and two short antennae.
Where the mayfly live
When it’s a mayfly nymph it lives in the streams on the rocks and when it’s a mayfly adult it lives in the forest or surrounding bush near the stream.
Mayflies life processes First a mayfly female adult lays an egg, Then the egg hatches into a nymph and lives on rock and eat algae. When it is fully grown it flies out of the water and goes to mate and live in the surrounding forest.
Mayflies life cycle Most female mayflies lay a few of their eggs at a time by dipping their abdomen in the water while they are flying. Some species go into the water and find a safe place to lay its eggs. The egg can take up to 2 and a half years or 3-4 weeks before it hatches its depends what sort of species the mayfly is. The mayfly nymph comes out and holds onto a rock and eats the algae off the rock. When it wants a new habitat it flows down to a different rock which its catch onto. Mayfly adult Fly out of the water and fly into the forest and they do not eat, They go off and mate and shred its skin for the last time and then goes off to died. Some mayfly adults live for only 2 hours others for up to 14 days.

Feeding Mayfly nymphs eat algae off the rocks in the stream and aquatic plants.
When they are a adult they don’t eat anything.
How has human activity affected the mauri of the stream and mayflies? Humans are polluting the rivers and streams and the pollution is killing the mayflies because mayfly can’t survive in poor water,They need very clean water.
How can I be a kaitiaki to mayflies? I can be a kaitiaiki to my animal by trying not to pollute the streams and river that Mayflies live in and by telling people to do the same.
Mayflies depend on people because if everyone just dumped their rubbish in the streams then mayflies would have nowhere to live and then there would be no more mayflies because of what people have done to are waterways. So now we have to try fix what are generation before us has done and try to help are waterways so they can be a better place safe place for everyone.

The sound of the gushing river fills my ears
The rainbow of colours all around me
The invisible cicadas singing all around
The birds flying so freely
The smell of the damp earth
I feel so free
I see all the trees surrounds me
The wildlife hides in its arm
I feel so safe and so sound
